Learn how to make a Bird Pod
Learn how to felt a 3D bird pod to use as a feeder or nest.
This video tutorial will take you step by step through the process of creating a spherical 3D felted object using a resist. You will learn how to build up layers of fibre, how to create and attach the hanger loop and how to create the opening.
The kit that goes with the tutorial contains bergschaf fibre, a robust, short staple wool which works beautifully with this technique.
I had tried making bird pods myself but felt they weren’t quite robust enough. Linda’s bird pod kit is perfect, great clear instructions and the wool is lovely to work with, I even had some left over! My completed bird pod looks fab hanging in my orange tree, the wool comes in such lovely complimenting colours. Through Linda’s tutorial I now know how much and which type of wool to use. Thank you Linda!
Materials List
You do not need to purchase the kit if you already have some felting materials, but my kits contain a selection of materials you will need without you having to buy them in larger quantities.
What you will need:
- waterproof table cover
- towel
- hand towel
- warm soapy water plus a bar of soap
- sharp scissors
- garden twine
- driftwood or wooden stick
- use of tumble dryer (optional)
If you have not purchased the kit you will also need:
- balloons x 2
- bubble wrap 1000 x 500mm
- plastic thin but sturdy resist 240mm diameter
- 100g bergschaf fibre
If you are sourcing your own fibre to follow the tutorial, you will need 100g fibre in total:
- 30g for your first two layers, 15g per side (forming the inside colour of the pod)
- 30g for the middle two layers, 15g per side (this will be mostly hidden, but will show up around the opening)
- 30g for the outer layer, 15g per side (I provide mixed colours for this in the kit)
- 10g for the hanging loop
Loved making this bird pod – it was so easy and the felting process was explained brilliantly. The colours of the felt are amazing. Hopefully I will be making another very soon.
This bird pod tutorial was excellent, very easy to follow with good videos. My first time using Bergschaf wool which was interesting, quite hairy. Thank you.
